While you would most certainly not consider taking your family car out on the road without adequate insurance, a surprisingly large number of people will happily ride around the golf course all day long without ever considering the need for golf cart insurance. And yet accidents resulting in damage to property and people, as well as to the cart itself, happen every day.

Golf cart insurance is no different to any other form of insurance, such as homeowners or auto insurance, and can protect you against loss of the vehicle, damage to the vehicle (including fire) and damage caused to individuals and property as a result of an accident.

When buying golf cart insurance you should first turn to your present insurer to see if he can provide you with the necessary cover and, if not, you will then need to look for a number of reputable insurers from whom you can request quotes.

In each case make sure that you read the plan carefully and do not simply gloss over the 'small print' which frequently contains extremely important details of the plan, including any exclusions.

Once you have found several plans which would provide you with the cover you require then, and only then, turn your attention to price and look for such things as a discount for paying your premium annually, rather than monthly, and the addition of future no claims bonuses.

Remember too that generally in life you 'get what you pay for' and while you may find basic cover at a low price, you might be wiser to pay a little bit more for additional benefits and peace of mind.

Before leaving the subject of golf cart insurance one very important point to remember is the use to which you are going to put your golf cart. Despite its name, a golf car is frequently used away from the golf course these days and this may well bring additional risks which you will need to make your insurer aware of. If you are in any doubt about whether you will be covered or not in a particular situation it is always wise to ask your insurance company and request that they provide you with their answer in writing.
